Clean Development Mechanism Executive Board Advances Work on the Road to COP26/CMP16
Bonn, 31 May 2021 – The Executive Board of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) concluded its 110th meeting on 27 May. The meeting was held virtually from 17 to 27 May.
The Board considered the options regarding the CDM registry to enable the issuance of CERs with respect to emission reductions occurring after the end of the second commitment period for voluntary cancellation purposes. As the Board could not find consensus on the matter, it was agreed to reflect the discussion and its lack of outcome in the Board’s annual report to the CMP.
Throughout these two weeks, the Board advanced its operational work and considered and finalized various case-specific rulings, including requests for registration, issuance, and renewals of crediting periods of Programme of Activities. The Board also approved revisions to one standard on sampling and surveys, six methodologies and tools, among others.
The Board then agreed to conduct the next survey to project participants on the status of their CDM activities in 2022 and on the methods for conducting the survey, after considering its scope and timing at the first meeting of the Board in 2022.
In response to a communication from a stakeholder, the Board clarified the registration modalities under the temporary measures referred to in the report published at EB 108.
The Board considered progress of on-going and proposed work regarding the digitalization of methodologies for web-based generation of project design documents and monitoring templates. The Board requested the secretariat to conduct further testing and analysis with the help of voluntary project participants, and to analyze further the impacts of an already existing digitized methodology.
The Board further agreed to extend the term of service of the current members of its support structure (including Working Groups, Panel and Expert Team) until 31 December 2022.
Finally, after adopting the report of this session, the Board agreed on the structure of its annual report to CMP 16 for the period from 15 December 2020 to 9 September 2021, a draft of which will be discussed at the 111th meeting of the CDM EB, to be held virtually from 30 August to 9 September 2021.
To conclude the meeting, Board members have single-handedly taken the floor on a more personal note to thank their colleague Mr. Jose Miguez for years of passionate commitment to the CDM, and for their fruitful and intense collaboration. It was Mr. Miguez’s last meeting as his term of office comes to an end on 30 June 2021.
