SSC Inputs on alternative methods for calculating emission reductions for small-scale project activities that propose the switch from non-renewable to renewable biomass

Background:
The Board, at its twenty-first meeting, agreed to delete the references to "non-renewable biomass" in the "Indicative simplified baseline and monitoring methodologies for selected small-scale CDM project activity categories" (Appendix B of the simplified modalities and procedures for small-scale project activities). This deletion shall become effective after the twenty-second meeting of the Board as contained in annex 22 of the report of the twenty-first meeting of the Board. The Board agreed that the SSC-WG shall undertake work on the development of methodologies for calculating emission reductions for small-scale project activities that propose the switch from non-renewable to renewable biomass on a priority basis.

In this regard, the Board requested the secretariat to launch a call for inputs related to alternative methods for calculating emission reductions for small-scale project activities that propose the switch from non-renewable to renewable biomass, taking into account the following guidance agreed by the Board at its twentieth meeting: “Where a project activity, which does not seek to obtain tCERs or lCERs from afforestation or reforestation project activities, may directly or indirectly result in a net increase of carbon pools compared to what would occur in the absence of the project activity, this increase should not be taken into account in the calculation of emission reductions” (for more information, please see Clarification on definition of biomass and on changes in carbon pools due to a CDM project activity (EB20, Annex 8) (23 KB)).
