CDM Board seeks input on EB65 annotated agenda, annexes

08 November 2011 - The CDM Executive Board invites comments from stakeholders on issues included in the annotated agenda for EB 65. This call for input allows stakeholders to share their opinion and give feedback on the CDM in a formal way, and reflects the Board’s ongoing commitment to communicate and collaborate with stakeholders for the good of the mechanism. more ».


CDM website gets new look in line with rebranded UNFCCC

03 November 2011 - The CDM website has a new look featuring the new UNFCCC logo launched in October. The logo was designed to present a new image highlighting the central theme of the Convention and the institutional linkage to the United Nations.


CDM Board calls for input to inform year-long policy dialogue

14 October - At its 64th meeting, the CDM Executive Board decided to launch a call for public input that will inform a policy dialogue in 2012 designed to learn from the past in order to build for the future. Also at the meeting held in Bonn, the Board considered inputs on the adequacy of CDM procedures for soliciting and considering stakeholder comments on projects undergoing validation. more ».


Public input sought on two draft revised methodologies

14 October 2011 - Input is sought (until 24 October 2011, 08:00 h GMT) on the draft revised methodologies (1) ACM0001 "Consolidated baseline and monitoring methodology for landfill gas project activities" and (2) AM0031 "Baseline methodology for bus rapid transit projects". more ».


EB64 annotated agenda open for public comment

10 October 2011 - The CDM Executive Board will hold its 64th meeting on 24-26 October in Bonn, Germany. As decided at its 62nd meeting, the Board invites the public to provide input on the annotated agenda for EB64 until 16 October (17:00 GMT). more ».


CDM Board seeks input on sampling

07 October 2011 - A call for input on a new section of the Draft standard for sampling and surveys for CDM project activities and programme of activities" has been launched. The standard aims to provide clarity on the application of statistical approaches, sampling and survey schemes in methodologies and projects. Input is sought on issues related to sampling and approaches that a DOE might take while validating a project or a programme of activities. more ».


Four new calls for public input launched

29 September - The Executive Board, at its sixty-third meeting, agreed to open four new calls for public input. These calls seek input from stakeholders on a new draft methodology, suppressed demand, standardised baselines and other methodological issues related to energy efficient lighting in buildings and solar cookers for households. more ».


Quito inspires launch of CDM policy dialogue

29 September - The CDM Executive Board concluded its 63rd meeting, in Quito, Ecuador, with a reinvigorated sense of purpose to make a transformed CDM the key instrument for stimulating low-carbon investment in developing countries. Many important decisions were taken, including a plan for a wide-ranging policy dialogue to be launched in Durban, South Africa, in November. more ».

23 September - The scores have been tallied and the finalists selected for the first CDM African Radio contest. CDM Rules and Reference web section gets a revamp

19 September - The secretariat is pleased to launch a new Rules and Reference section on the CDM website, featuring a clearer interface and streamlined navigation that make finding sought-after information quicker and easier. Users can search by subject and browse by document type or business function. Search results show the chain of discussion by the CDM Executive Board, which brings subjects into useful context. more »


EB meeting report summary available in six languages

16 September - The Secretariat has begun offering summaries of CDM EB meeting reports in all six UN official languages, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), English, French, Russian and Spanish (Castilian), in response to a request from Parties to the Kyoto Protocol and a decision of the Board. The first summary was prepared for EB61, in English. The six language editions commence with the EB62 summary, just released. more »


EB63 annotated agenda open for public comment

12 September - The CDM Executive Board will hold its 63rd meeting on 25-29 September in Quito, Ecuador. A s decided at its previous meeting, the Board invites the public to provide input on the annotated agenda for EB63 and its annexes until 18 September (17:00 GMT). more »


Public input sought on methodology, tool

29 August 2011 - Input is sought (until 8 September 2011, 15.00 h GMT) on (1) a draft revised baseline and monitoring methodology for mass rapid transit projects (ACM0016), which includes an innovative approach for additionality demonstration and reduces monitoring requirements, and (2) a draft revised tool relating to emissions from solid waste disposal sites, which features improved usability and expanded applicability. more »

15 August 2011 - The UNFCCC secretariat is pleased to launch its annual CDM International Photo and Video Contest, on the theme Changing Lives. Input sought on stakeholder consultation, additionality

18 July 2011 - At its sixty-second meeting, which just concluded in Marrakesh, Morocco, the CDM Executive Board decided to launch two calls for public input: one on the application of the requirements for consideration of stakeholders' inputs during the project validation process, the other on so-called first-of-its-kind and common practice considerations in determining project additionality. Important strides made at Board's 62nd meeting

15 July 2011 - Meeting in Marrakesh, the city where the rules of the Clean Development Mechanism were agreed some 10 years ago, the CDM Executive Board approved two important guidelines that should allow low-greenhouse-gas emitting countries and underrepresented countries to benefit more from the mechanism. The Board also agreed important procedures that will enhance communication between the Board and stakeholders. more »

CDM Board celebrates Marrakesh Accords

11 July 2011 - The CDM Executive Board is in Marrakesh, Morocco, this week holding its sixty-second meeting. The meeting opened with a brief ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Marrakesh Accords, the rules that govern the CDM. Board Chair Martin Hession reflected on how far the mechanism has come, including more recent substantial advances, and spoke about the important work that lies ahead. more »


Contest launched for African radio journalists

30 June 2011 - As part of its efforts to raise awareness about the CDM in Africa, the secretariat invites African radio journalists to answer the question: "How can my community/city/country benefit from the CDM?" The top entrants will be given a chance to attend a workshop and briefings at the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa, in Nov.-Dec. 2011. more »

22 June 2011 - The UNFCCC secretariat has begun publishing concise summaries of the outcomes of CDM Executive Board meetings to help make the work of the Board more accessible. Calls for public input launched

03 June 2011 - The CDM Executive Board, at its sixty-first meeting, agreed to open four calls for public input, on:
Identification of common issues in the implementation of a registered A/R CDM project activity;
Key issues identified in relation to the development of a solar cooker methodology;
Draft small-scale methodology for water saving devices; and How to include co-benefits in the documentation of CDM project activities and the role of the different actors and stakeholders in this process. more »

25 May 2011 - In the interest of transparency and continuous learning, the UNFCCC secretariat compiles the causes of CDM registration and issuance submissions failing to pass the completeness and information and reporting checks. CDM passes milestone 3000th project

05 May 2011 - The CDM has registered its 3000th project, a wind power project in Inner Mongolia, China. Growth in the mechanism remains steady – projects entering validation in the first quarter of 2011 increased 17 percent compared to the same period in 2010. more »


Call for public inputs on water purification methodology

15 April 2011 - The CDM Executive Board has launched a call for public input on small-scale methodology AMS-III.AV: "Low greenhouse gas emitting water purification systems", to explore opportunities to further expand the usability of this methodology. more »

23 March 2011 - The Chair of the Methodologies Panel, at its forty-eighth meeting held in Bonn 7-11 March, has launched a call for public inputs into the draft revised methodology AM0055 “Baseline and monitoring methodology for the recovery and utilization of waste gas in refinery facilities”. more »

Radio stories for Africa

17 March 2011 - The UNFCCC secretariat has produced five ‘broadcast-ready’ radio stories for dissemination to radio stations in Africa. These stories are meant to make the CDM understandable and accessible to a broad audience, including community stakeholders, potential project participants and policy makers. more »


Call for experts launched

21 February 2011 - The CDM Executive Board has launched a call for experts for members of the Methodologies Panel, Afforestation and Reforestation Working Group, Small-Scale Working Group and CDM Accreditation Panel.
The four calls are open from 21 February 2011 until 21 March 2011, 18:00 GMT.


EB 59 proposed agenda, annotations available

18 February 2011 - The CDM Executive Board adopted a comprehensive two-year business plan to scale up and improve the mechanism and gave a green light to the UNFCCC secretariat’s detailed management plan, at a meeting which saw the election of new Chair Martin Hession and Vice-Chair Maosheng Duan. more >>

18 February 2011 - The CDM Executive Board, at its 59th meeting, agreed to open four calls for public input on: issues associated with the development and scaling-up of Programmes of Activities; areas and means for direct communication with stakeholder groups; further expansion of the applicability of methodology AMS-III.AJ "Recovery and recycling of materials from solid wastes"; and "Guidelines for demonstrating additionality of renewable energy projects =<5 MW and energy efficiency projects with energy savings <=20 GWh per year". more >>

CER issuance tops 500 million

10 January 2011 - Issuance of certified emission reductions (CERs) produced under the CDM has topped 500 million. There are now some 2740 CDM projects registered in 70 developing countries, and in total more than 501 million CERs have been issued to 855 projects. more >>

    Data on wind and hydro tariffs in China published

    24 June 2010 - The UNFCCC secretariat has published detailed information on wind and hydro tariffs in the People's Republic of China applied by the CDM Executive Board in its decisions on reviews of requests for project registration. The information note, prepared at the request of the Board, is intended to provide transparency on the appropriateness of the applicable highest tariffs for wind and hydro power projects in China, per province, applied by the Board in its decisions. Such tariffs figure prominently in the determination project additionality. more »

    Regional DNA Forum for Africa wraps up at UN compound in Nairobi

    04 March 2010 - The first Regional DNA Forum for Africa has concluded its work at the UN Gigiri compound in Nairobi. It was an extremely positive meeting bringing together 85 CDM designated national authority delegates representing 44 countries, 23 invited speakers, including the Chair and Vice-Chair of the CDM Executive Board, private sector representatives and international organizations. The forum focused on improving access to the CDM in Africa.


    CDM Executive Board selects Chair, Vice-Chair

    08 February 2010 - The Executive Board of the clean development mechanism (CDM) has chosen Clifford Mahlung of Jamaica to chair the Board in 2010, and Pedro Martins Barata of Portugal to serve as Vice-Chair.
    Mr. Mahlung, who was Vice-Chair in 2009, takes over from Lex de Jonge of the Netherlands.   more »


    Clean Development Mechanism passes 2000th registered project milestone in less than two years

    06 January 2010 - The Kyoto Protocol’s clean development mechanism (CDM) has registered its 2000th project, a biogas extraction and utilization project, in Sakaeo Province, Thailand, expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 56,000 tonnes annually.

    UNFCCC CDM Photo and Video Contest 2009 -- Changing Lives . . . And the winners are!

    01 December 2009 - The judges’ scores have been tallied in the CDM Changing Lives Photo and Video Contest, and here are the winning entries. This year’s contest expanded on the success of Changing Lives 2008, with the addition of a video category, in which entrants were asked to complete the statement, “People should know about this CDM project because . . .”. The winners were recognized in a ceremony hosted by UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de Boer in Copenhagen on 11 December. Congratulations to the winners, and congratulations and thank you to all of the talented entrants in this year's contest.

    Nairobi Framework welcomes new partners

    Two more international agencies have thrown their support behind the Nairobi Framework initiative aimed at assisting developing countries, especially those in sub-Saharan Africa, to improve their level of participation in the clean development mechanism.     CDM Technology Transfer report released

    18 March 2009 - The UNFCCC secretariat has released a study, prepared by a team of consultants, containing an analysis of information on: Technology Transfer (TT) used in CDM; TT by project type (24 project types); TT by host country; technology supplier versus buyer participants; origin of technology; and TT versus technology needs, as submitted by project participants in their project design documents.     03 December 2008 - Judging has wrapped up in the UNFCCC/CDM International Photo Contest 2008. From the more than 150 images that were entered, Catching the Sun, by Nic Bothma, of South Africa, took top honours. Photos from Inner Mongolia, India and Brazil, rounded out the top four. Congratulations to the top finishers and to everyone who entered.

    John Kilani appointed Director in support of Kyoto Protocol carbon market mechanisms

    30 June 2008 - Mr. John Kilani has accepted the post of Director of the Sustainable Development Mechanisms (SDM) programme at the United Nations climate change secretariat. The appointment was announced by UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de Boer, who expressed his confidence in the new Director, set to take up duties later this summer.   Press release


    Public comments on CDM-VVM

    20 June 2008 - The Executive Board, at its thirty-ninth meeting (EB39), considered the draft CDM validation and verification manual (CDM-VVM) and agreed to invite public for comments on the draft for the period of 16 May 2008 to 15 June 2008.

    Memorandum of Understanding on the exchange of CDM data

    22 May 2008 - The UNFCCC secretariat has signed the first memorandums of understanding with two important CDM information providers that should result in their receiving a faster, smoother flow of CDM data. IGES based in Japan and UNEP Risoe, in Denmark will soon begin receiving data from the secretariat directly in electronic form, to enhance these long-established and much-used data and analysis services. The data will continue to be made available on the UNFCCC CDM website, and any CDM data and resultant analysis by IGES and UNEP Risoe will continue to be made available on the web free of charge.


    CDM passes 1000th registered project milestone

    14 April 2008 - The Kyoto Protocol’s clean development mechanism has registered its 1000th project, an energy efficiency project in Andhra Pradesh, India, expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 34,000 tonnes annually. The project was registered by CDM Executive Board Chair Rajesh Kumar Sethi at an impromptu ceremony at a joint coordination workshop in Bonn, Germany.   Press release


    CDM Catalogue of Decisions

    09 January 2008 - The Catalogue of CDM related decisions (CoD) has been posted on the CDM website. The CoD aims to facilitate the development of CDM project activities by improving access to information. The CoD project was launched at the CDM Joint Coordination Workshop 2007 in March, in Bonn. Since then, the CoD has been fed, tested and improved thanks to users' comments. It is now open for a broad user test/comment phase until the end of the year more »

    CDM Bazaar web-portal will link buyers, sellers and service providers

    05 December 2007 - The CDM Bazaar web-portal www.cdmbazaar.net has been launched to facilitate exchange of information among buyers, sellers and service providers engaged in the Kyoto Protocol’s clean development mechanism (CDM). This joint effort of the UNFCCC secretariat and UNEP RISOE Centre in Denmark will help stakeholders in the CDM “get down to business,” said UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de Boer
