1st small-scale CDM project activity registered

1st small-scale CDM project activity registered

We have the pleasure to announce that the project activity "RIO BLANCO Small Hydroelectric Project" has been registered as the second CDM project activity. It is the first small-scale project activity which has been recognized under the CDM.

The project is located in the San Francisco de Yojoa Municipality, Department of Cortés, in Honduras. It produces power which is sold to the national power utility (ENEE) in a run-off-river hydroelectric plant. The expected certified emission reductions from the project are projected by the developers to be approximately 178,000t of CO2 equivalent over a crediting period of ten years.

The project contributes to sustainable development by improving electricity supply for the San Francisco de Yojoa Municipality and allows communities previously without power to use it and increase their productivity. The project thus feeds into the country's efforts to improve rural electrification and serves as a small demonstration project for clean renewable energy generation, creating permanent and temporary employment as it is being implemented and operated.

Information on this CDM project activity and related documents are available on the UNFCCC CDM web site ( http://cdm.unfccc.int/Projects/registered.html).
